Duke Pediatrics Reach Out and Read Inc

So Dave and I are going to warm up for our spring Raleigh Rocks Half Marathon by running a 5k race the day before the Half to support Reach Out and Read. It will be a good taper run for me and Dave, but the exciting news is that Carolyn (my sister for those of you who don't know) will also be running the race! This will NOT be a taper run for her, but a long run for her after years of not running at all.

Carolyn has been working for a non-profit organization called Reach Out and Read for more than six years. Reach Out and Read prepares America's youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. Doctors, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read's evidence-based model into regular pediatric checkups, by advising parents about the importance of reading aloud and giving developmentally- and culturally-appropriate books to children. The program begins at the 6-month checkup and continues through age 5, with a special emphasis on children growing up in low-income communities. Fifteen published studies demonstrate Reach Out and Read’s impact – families served by Reach Out and Read read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills, better prepared to achieve their potential.

Nationally, Reach Out and Read serves more than four million children who are most at-risk for school failure. We've created the North Carolina Reach Out and Read chapter to better serve the 140,796 children in the state who already receive books through our program, and to expand Reach Out and Read so that we can help prepare more North Carolina children for school success. Currently, there are 152 clinics across the state that participate in Reach Out and Read and share the joy of reading with the families they serve.

Every day, the doctors we partner with touch the lives of millions of children across the U.S. The books and advice Reach Out and Read gives to families makes a real difference. The children we serve get to kindergarten ready to learn, with larger vocabularies. The parents we serve are more likely to share books with their children because our doctors tell them that reading is important to the development of their children. Reach Out and Read isn't just about giving out books -- it's about building stronger families.

Please help us support Carolyn, Reach Out and Read, and the many children whose lives are improved daily by their work.
