ABOUT US
Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc. is a non-profit agency committed to enhancing the quality of life for eligible homebound adults in our community. Our mission is to serve the elderly, frail, disabled, convalescing and others who cannot provide proper nutrition for themselves. Dedicated volunteers deliver lunches to our clients each weekday, with the objective of improving the nutritional status and health of these individuals. It is our goal that this combination of nutritious meals and social contact will help our clients to remain independent as long as possible.
This year, Meals on Wheels Durham is proud to partner with the Great Human Race as part of our annual March for Meals. To explain this history of our yearly march: On March 22, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. For more than 45 years, these critical programs – commonly referred to as Meals on Wheels – have delivered more than just nutritious meals to homebound seniors in virtually every community across the country. And, the dedicated staff and volunteers who deliver these meals each week provide a vital lifeline and connection to the community, which are sometimes all it takes to keep our senior neighbors at home, where they want to be.
Meals on Wheels programs have come together each March since 2002 to celebrate this proven collaboration of local community organizations, businesses, all levels of government and compassionate individuals to ensure that our seniors are not forgotten. By volunteering, donating or speaking out, you can ensure the seniors in your neighborhood can live more healthy, happy and independent lives at home, where they want to be. This year, please join us at the Great Human Race to raise visbility for our cause.
Right now, Meals on Wheels of Durham's biggest struggle is our waiting list. We are proud to serve over 500 seniors in need,
but we have a waiting list of over 300 seniors who need our services. Please join us on race day for a community walk, as we raise awareness for our mission. If you would like to donate to our cause, please use the donation box to the top right of this page.
