Through my work at CASA, I get to know men, women and children who have moved out of homelessness and into an apartment. No matter how many times I see the unabashed joy in someone's eyes when they walk in their doorway or hear a parent describe their child's peace in a room of her own, I know that I cannot even come close to knowing how it feels not to have a safe place to sleep, clean sheets, or food in a pantry to feed my child.
But there something we can DO to end homelessness for more people-- and that is to build and offer more housing options that are affordable. Our community is growing, rents are rising and the rental market is squeezing more and more people out of places to live -- people most hurt are those who live with disabilities and/or earn a modest wage.
CASA renters pay 30% of their income, regardless of the amount. As a nonprofit, we depend upon the generosity of our community to cover the difference between what our renters can afford to pay and the costs to operate our apartments.
$250 will cover the gap for a family's first month in their CASA home. Please consider a gift of any amount to help me reach my goal.
AND, come out and run or walk with me on April 30!
