With your help, 10 AAD students will be spending their Friday mornings in April and May at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences this spring. We'll spend most of our time at the museum's beautiful Prairie Ecostation, learning about local ecology and collecting data for citizen science research projects on bird migration and nesting. Then we'll get a "behind the scenes" introduction to the museum's other facilities and collections, explore family science learning opportunities, and meet with staff who can open our minds to the many career possibilities in science and museum work.
Here are some pics from last year's workshop.
Supporting science education at the Achievement Academy
For the past three years, we have been developing an exciting partnership with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh. Our students are invited to a series of workshops at the museum’s Prairie Ridge Ecostation to participate in citizen science research activities that we’ve linked to GED learning goals.
The museum staff and our students want to continue this collaboration and create some new opportunities for helping our parenting students encourage their children’s natural curiosity about science. You can help support the curriculum development work we have to do for including these family-oriented experiences and help with the cost of transporting our students to Prairie Ridge and the museum’s new Nature Research Center. We would also like to expand our postsecondary workstudy program to include off-site internships in science and technology related fields.
